Player in focus: Karim Benzema

Karin Benzema was Real Madrid’s go-to man in the 2018-19 season, spearheading the Los Blancos attack across all competitions.

The French forward netted 21 goals in 36 LaLiga matches to help Real Madrid finish in third place.

In all competitions, the French forward notched up 30 goals form 53 games, his highest tally since the 2011-12 campaign where he found the net on 32 occasions.

Scoring five goals in his first four games this season, Benzema then went nine games without a goal before netting in a 2-1 win over Czech side Viktoria Plzen.

Benzema then enjoyed a run of seven goals in seven games to help Madrid up to second in LaLiga and progress into the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.

Apart from scoring goals, Benzema has been providing crucial assists for his teammates.

In the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg at the Camp Nou, Benzema tormented the FC Barcelona backline, laying on an assist for Lucas Vázquez to open the scoring.

It took only until February for Benzema surpass his tally from last season when he netted his 19th goal of the season against Ajax in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

Benzema has been a reliable presence in the Madrid side since moving to the Bernabéu from Lyon in the summer of 2009.

His goal against Ajax was his 211th in all competitions for Madrid, enough to put him sixth on the list of all-time leading scorers at the club.

Benzema made a steady start to life as a Real Madrid player after moving from Olympique Lyonnais in the summer of 2009.

Nine goals in 33 games was followed up with 26 in 48 as Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey against FC Barcelona.

That was followed by his most prolific season as a forward in 2011-12, helping Madrid to clinch LaLiga with 100 points.

The 2018-19 season was Benzema’s tenth wearing the Los Blancos jersey.

In that time, he was won 17 major honours, scoring 222 goals in the process.
