Premier League preview: Stars to watch this season

7 August 2019

The return of the Premier League is just days away and there’s plenty of excitement surrounding all 20 teams.

Manchester City prevailed last season, defending their crown as Pep Guardiola’s side held off Liverpool in a thrilling title race.

The league starts afresh this Friday with Jürgen Klopp’s men raising the curtain at home to newly promoted Norwich.

Plenty of players have come and gone since the end of last season but as we approach the first matches, here are some of the stars to look out for in the campaign ahead.

Tanguy Ndombele

A marquee signing, Tottenham are getting a prized international asset in Tanguy Ndombele.

The central midfielder has joined Mauricio Pochettino’s side from Olympique Lyonnais to bolster a strong midfield line-up.

Ndombele is renowned for his power and incisiveness in the middle of the park, with an eye for driving at the opposition.

The midfielder should excite Tottenham fans and already has an assist to his name after setting up Lucas Moura with a fine pass against Juventus.

Chrisitan Pulisic

Announced earlier in the year, Christian Pulisic has had to wait a while for his Chelsea debut but the American will be worth the wait.

Linking up with Chelsea this summer, Pulisic enjoyed three years at Borussia Dortmund, helping the club qualify for the Champions League.

The American has already made his name at the club, scoring in pre-season and will be vying for a starting place for Chelsea’s first match of the season against Manchester United.

The 20-year-old has plenty of leadership qualities having already captained his national team and will be looking to spearhead Frank Lampard’s men in the Champions League and Premier League.

Sadio Mané

One of the outstanding stars from last season for Liverpool, Sadio Mané is a player every fan of the Premier League should keep their eye on.

The Senegalese forward joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2016 and has helped the Reds become Premier League challengers once more.

Last season the attacker netted 22 goals in 36 games as Liverpool finished on 97 points, but only enough to finish second in the table.

Mané’s heroics also helped Liverpool win a sixth Champions League and after having his most prolific season of his career, the forward is set to have another outstanding campaign.

Nicolas Pépé

One of the most exciting signings of the summer, Nicolas Pépé will be aiming to fire Arsenal back into the Champions League.

With bags of pace and skills, the winger made a reputation for himself playing for Lille in Ligue 1.

The wide man netted 22 times last season as Lille qualified for the Champions League group stage for the first time in seven seasons.

Pépé will be hoping to form a deadly partnership with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette at the top of Arsenal’s attack.

Arsenal finished fifth last season, missing out on Champions League final by a point but with the addition of Pépé, the Gunners could find their way back into the top four for the first time in three years.

Kevin De Bruyne

Hampered by injury last season, Kevin De Bruyne is back in the groove this pre-season and ready to have a huge impact on the Premier League.

The 2017-18 was special for the Belgian as he provided 21 assists and netted 12 goals as City reached 100 Premier League points.

Despite playing 20 fewer games last season, De Bruyne still provided 11 assists to help City win the domestic treble.

The creative midfielder already has a goal in pre-season and Pep Guardiola will be confident his mercurial assist machine is at the top of his game in the 2019-20 campaign.
