Serie A: The stars to watch in 2019-20

20 August 2019

The return of the Serie A is just days away with excitement building from both fans and players alike.

Juventus dominated last year and hope to extend their reign as Serie A champions for an eighth season in a row.

The season gets underway this Saturday with Parma hosting the defending champions.

Plenty of players have come and gone since the end of last year’s campaign but as the new season draws closer, here are some of the stars to look out for.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Coming off an impressive yet unsurprising first season in the Serie A, Ronaldo hopes for more of the same as his 2018-19 season saw him net 21 Serie A goals.

The Portuguese striker joined Juventus from Real Madrid in 2018, helping the Bianconeri win yet another league title.

The star also helped Juventus to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League by scoring a hat-trick against Atlético Madrid.

Ronaldo has bene firing in goals during pre-season and will be keep surpassing his scoring haul from last season.

Romelu Lukaku

One of the most exciting additions to the Serie A, Romelu Lukaku looks to prove himself as a leading light for Inter.

Lukaku leaves Manchester United with 42 goals to his name for the Red Devils and will be looking to push Inter into Serie A title contention.

Lukaku marked his first appearance in an Inter Milan shirt by scoring four goals in a friendly against Virtus Bergamo which is just the start to a possibly very successful 2019/20 campaign.

Matthijs De ligt

Matthijs De Ligt impressed the world in his three seasons for Ajax, sparking interest from huge clubs such as FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

De Ligt is set to be a fantastic signing for Juventus as the young Dutch international and will be a leader in the team.

The international was made captain of Ajax at just 17 years old and proved to the world how good he was in their impressive Champions League run last season.

The Dutchman also scored on his debut for Ajax making him the second youngest goalscorer behind legend Clarence Seedorf.

The future is bright for this young defender so make sure to keep an eye on him as the new campaign gets underway.

Kostas Manolas

A great signing for Napoli and a fantastic addition to the Serie A, Kostas Manolas will be partnered with another world class centre back in the form of Kalidou Koulibaly, strengthening their defence in the hope of ending Juventus’s dominance.

Manolas is known for his strength, defending skills and winning mentality just the kind of player Napoli need if they are going to win the Serie A.

The Greek defender has been described as a ‘colossus’ and sparked interest from many clubs during the summer transfer window such as Manchester united Everton and arsenal.

Danilo

A solid addition to the Serie A champions, Danilo will replace Joao Cancelo who moved to Manchester City.

The Brazilian defender only played 11 games for City last year due to injuries but is now fit and ready to show his quality in the Serie A.

The full back has already won two premier leagues, two consecutive Primeira Liga titles a FA Cup and is hoping to add a Serie A title to the collection.
